The external medicinal substance and inner medicinal substance
Can you give me an explanation as to the definition of both external medicinal substance (外药) and inner medicinal substance (内药), as well as their difference? I read one verse from Understanding the Reality (translated by Thomas Cleary) as listed below:

The inner medicine is after all the same as the outer medicine;
When the inner is mastered, the outer should be mastered too.
In the compounding of the elixir, the ingredients are of the same type;
The incubation involves two kinds of operation.

Inside there is natural real fire, bright in the furnace, ever crimson.
The adjustment of the outer furnace requires deligent work.
Nothing is more sublime than the true seed.

内药还同外药,
内通外亦须通。
丹头和合类相同,
温养两般作用。

内有天然真火,
炉中赫赫长红。
外炉增减要勤功,
妙绝无过真种
