Scenic Spots in Shandong Province

Mount Tai

Mount Tai is located in the central part of Shandong Province. Mount Tai, Mount Hua, Mount Heng(ɽ), Mount Heng(ɽ) and Mount Song together are called "the Five Mountains", while Mount Tai has always been considered as the first of the Five Mountains. It stretches across Jinan, Changqing, Licheng and Taian, with a total area of 426 square kilometers. The main peak lies in Taian, 1,545 meters above sea level. Mount Tai was a mountain for worship by emperors of different dynasties, and also the only famous mountain in history that was qualified to accept the emperors' offerings. Eminent ancient scholars, masters and poets all yearned for it. Confucius, Sima Qian, Li Bai, Du Fu, Su Shi, Song Lian, Yao Nai and others all visited the mountain, leaving plenty of cultural relics behind.

Temple of Mount Taishan

It is situated in the northwest of Taian City at the foot of Mount Tai. Built a long, long time ago, it was grand in scale even in the Qin Dynasty. Palaces were built here in the Han Dynasty. It was repaired and extended in later dynasties. Unfortunately, the temple was destroyed in the war in 1928, and rebuilt afterwards.

Daming Lake

Daming Lake is located in the northeast of Jinan City. At its entrance is Daming Lake Archway, on the western side of which is the ruins of the ancient Xiayuan Garden. Inside the garden is Haoran Pavilion. The present pavilion site was selected in the Jia Jing period of the Ming Dynasty when the pavilion was rebuilt. On the northern bank of Daming Lake is the North Pole Pavilion, to the east of which is Zeng Gong's Temple as Zeng Gong came from Nanfeng, Jiangxi. Zeng Gong was governor of Jinan in the fifth year of the Xi Yu period of the Northern Song Dynasty (1072 A.D.) and brought benefit to the local people, so he is still remembered now. To the west of the North Pole Pavilion is Tie Gong's Temple, which was built in memory of Tie Xuan of the Ming Dynasty. Here is the best spot for enjoying the beautiful scenery of Daming Lake, i.e. "There are lotuses on the four sides and willows on the three sides. The whole city is filled with a mountainous landscape and half the city is covered by lake water". To the south of Daming Lake is Jiaxuan Temple, built in memory of Xin Qiji, the great poet of the Southern Song Dynasty.

The Thousand-Buddha Hill

It is located to the southeast of Jinan City, with a height of 281 meters. In ancient times, the hill was called Miji Hill and Lishan Hill. When the Buddha statues chiseled on the hill in the Sui Dynasty, it was renamed the Thousand-Buddha Hill. Buddha statues are all found on the Thousand-Buddha Cliff behind the Xingguo Temple. The earliest were over 60 stone Buddha statues carved in the Sui Dynasty. Below the Thousand-Buddha Cliff are the Jile Cave, the Qianlou Cave and the Longquan Cave. In the Jile Cave, the largest of the 16 Buddha statues is as tall as three meters.

Nine Hills

Standing on the Thousand-Buddha Hill and looking to north, one can see nine isolated hills near Jinan: Wozhu Hill, Huashan Hill, Queshan Hill, Biaoshan Hill, Phoenix Hill, Northern Maanshan Hill, Lishan Hill, Kuangshan Hill and Yaoshan Hill.

The Xingguo Temple

Situated on the Thousand-Buddha Hill, the Xingguo Temple was first built in the Tang Dynasty and repaired and extended in generations. Climbing 300 stone steps from the Half-Hill Pavilion, one comes to the Xingguo Temple. Inside the temple are the Main Hall and other structures. On the cliff to the southwest of the temple are cut four Chinese seal characters, "Di Yi Mi Hua" ( No.1 Temple), covering an area of 15 square meters and going into the rock for more than 20 centimeters. This is one of the well-known stone carvings in Jinan.

Baotu Spring

Located in Baotu Spring Park southwest of the old Jinan City, Baotu Spring is one of the 72 famous springs in Jinan. The book Notes on Water describes Baotu Spring like this, " Spring water gushes out like wheels". The two Chinese words "Bao Tu" mean surging of water. The spring has three mouths, from which water comes out all the year round, with a surrounding area of 3.3 hectares. As the spring water is excellent in quality, fragrant tea can be made with it. To the west of the spring is the Watching-Crane Pavilion, in which seats are available for tea.

The Jutting Pier

The Jutting Pier is located on the beach at the southern end of Zhongshan Road in Qingdao City, as long as 440 meters long, and completely built of granite. It juts out into the sea like a giant's arm. At its tip is Silan Pavilion, in which there is a spiral staircase for tourists going to the top of the pavilion and looking into the distance.

Laoshan Mountain

Laoshan Mountain is Shandong Peninsula's main mountain range, with the highest peak being 1,113 meters above sea level. Standing by the seaside, Laoshan Mountain is towering and precipitous. With the waterfalls, floating clouds, and green trees and bamboos, Laoshan Mountain has a spectacular scenery. There is a saying that Mount Tai is magnificent, but Laoshan Mountain is even more so. The specialty of Laoshan Mountain is mineral water, containing many kinds of minerals. According to the measurement, each liter contains 213 grams of carbon dioxide. It is known for invigorating the function of stomach and the circulation of blood.

Golden Line Springs

Golden Line Springs are located to the west of the reception room of Baotu Spring Park. As the two springs interflow with each other, sunshine forms a water line on the water surface: hence the name.

Shuyu Spring

Shuyu Spring became well-known as the famous female poet of the Song Dynasty Li Qingzhao once lived here. The name originated from Li Qingzhao's Shuyu Collection. To the north of the spring is Li Qingzhao Memorial Hall. A couplet inside roughly means that Li Qingzhao's former residence lay in the depth of poplars beside Baotu Spring on Daming Lake and her poems in her collections reflected the traditional style of Emperor Chen, also a famous poet, of the Southern Dynasties.

Pearl Spring

Pearl Spring is situated in the court of Pearl Spring Hotel in the old city of Jinan. When spring water comes out from the pool bottom, countless water bubbles appear like strings of pearls. Hence the name of the spring. In the spring there are schools of carps playing, with bubbles from their mouths, a vivid scene of carps playing with pearls. By the side of the spring is a crab apple which is said to be planted in the Song Dynasty, commonly called "Song Crab Apple".

Black Tiger Spring

Black Tiger Spring lies in the southeast of the old city of Jinan. On the southern wall of the pool are three carved stone tiger heads and from the tiger mouths spring water comes out. Hence the name of the spring. However, someone believes that spring water dashing against rocks produces a noise like the roars of a tiger: hence the name.

Five-Dragon Pool

Located in the west of the old city of Jinan, Five-Dragon Pool is said to be related to a Shandong hero Qin Qiong living between the Sui Dynasty and the Tang Dynasty. Legend has it that Qin Qiong's residence sank after a torrential rain, thus forming the present Five-Dragon Pool. It is said that beside the pool there used to be a stone tablet inscribed with "Qin Qiong's Former Residence, which was probably erected by a busybody.

Qingdao

Qingdao is situated on the southern side of Shandong Peninsula, on the eastern bank of Jiaozhou Bay and at the end of Jiaozhou-Jinan Railway. Jiaozhou Bay is shaped like a gourd, with a width of 2,818 kilometers from east to west, and a length of 33 kilometers from south to north. Qingdao lies at the tip of the "gourd". It has a maritime climate, the rising and falling topography, and a beautiful scenery, so it is a rare tourist city of Shandong Province.
