Southern Grotto Temple

It is the most beautiful, most steepest and most surprising building in 36 cliff buildings. As the history rains and winds rush away the memories, there only left with Southern Grotto40 house spaces attached to the stone half way down the cliff. The Tianyizhenqing Palace, located behind the Primeval Master Palace, stations to cave in along the deep dropping cliffs which is around a hundred meters deep. All building material is wood and stone and the ancient workers chisel the cliff to make a space 12 meters deep. All the girders, pillars, walls and arches above are granite slats, making up a wonderful stone sculpture. There are tens of deity statues displaying around.

South grotto, also called "Duyang Crag " " Zhixiao Crag " is thought as "a fairy land " by Taoism. South Crag has exotic and steep peaks and ridges and is covered by lush green trees. It stretches up into the green clouds and mist , overlooks deep gully below and is the most beautiful place of 36 crags of Wudang Mountain. It was recorded that there were Taoists practicing here early in the Tang Dynasty. Many Palaces were built during the Yuan Dynasty. In the first year of Yanyou Period of Emperor Renzhong of the Yuan Dynasty (1314 A.D.), a tablet " Heaven-Zhengqin Wanshou Palace" was bestowed. It is a pity that most parts of it were destroyed by war during the late Yuan Dynasty and restored in the 11 th year of Yongle Period of the Ming Dynasty( 1413 A.D.)

There are 150 rooms of various sizes including palaces, Taoist Rooms and pavilions. bestowed by a tablet "Giant Holy South Rock Palace ", By the 31th year of Jiaxu Period (1552 A.D.), this palace expanded up to 460 rooms , Only architectures such as Stone Palace built in the Yuan Dynasty ,South Gate to Heaven ,Stele Pavilion and Liangyi Palace built in the Ming Dynasty and the relics of Yuanjun Palace , Nanxun Pavilion ,Yuanguang Palace are still kept now. From South Gate to Heaven, entering Small Gate to Heaven, through Stele Pavilion, you can see Chongfu Crag which is commonly thought "stepping on the Tiger Crag" In the distance is Yuanguang Palace, Lanxun Pavilion, there are the relics of 18 Chess Lawns, Taishang Taoist Temple, Wushi Palace, Fangzhang, Fasting Hall in length and breadth. There are Dishui Crag, Xuanlu Crag, Black Tiger Crag, Red Army Cave, Leisheng Cave, Xietiandi Crag ,Dragon Pool, and so on, which face deep gully with towering cliff. Dragon and Tiger Palace is a scenic spot of South Crag, outside of which is a big courtyard paved by square stones. there is a well with hexagonal stone rails in the courtyard, the water of which is as sweet and faint fragrant as amrita. So it is called "amrita well" and is one of best of fountain water in Wudang Mountain. From the courtyard , you can mount Chong Rock adorned by layers of Danxi , It is a site of Yuanjun Palace
